  Problem Solving Skills

The basic skill that is required by today’s learners is the ability to solve a complex or an ill-structured work problem in the workplace especially at a high-level performance organization.

In simple terms problem solving is “what you do when you don’t know what to do.”

Understanding how problem-solving abilities develop is not easy, and measuring their development is even more complex. Problem solving is all about using logic as well as imagination and come up with an intelligent solution. It is connected to a number of other skills-

Level headedness and resilience are important for assessing a situation.
You will need analytical skills, creativity and logical thinking to reach a solution.
You may also need good teamwork skills if you’re in a group.
Even though it won’t be specified in the job description, many employers will look for problem solving skills at various stages of the application process. This may be in the form of anything from psychometric tests to group activities or one-to-one interviews.
If you’re set a problem as part of the graduate recruitment process, you could try using the IDEAL model which breaks down what you need to do to solve a problem into stages.
Whatever issues you are faced with, some steps are fundamental:
Identify the problem
Define the problem
Examine alternatives
Act on a plan
Look at the consequences
No job is without its problems and it is therefore important to show to a recruiter that you have the right skills to see problems as challenges and to thrive on the pressure they may bring
