STEM Programs, CPT and OPT

Powering the Future: STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. These fields drive innovation and economic growth across the globe. US universities are at the forefront of STEM research and development. You’ll have access to cutting-edge facilities, renowned faculty, and exciting internship opportunities.

Your OPT Advantage: The good news is that graduates of designated STEM programs in the US are eligible for an extended OPT period (more on that below!). This gives you extra time to gain valuable work experience.

What is CPT?

CPT stands for Curricular Practical Training. It is a type of work authorization that allows international students (F-1 visa holders) in the United States to gain employment experience in their field of study before graduation. CPT is intended to provide students with practical training (either full-time or part-time) that is an integral part of an established curriculum, such as internships, cooperative education, or practicum that is required by their degree programs.

CPT is beneficial for F-1 visa international students who are enrolled in academic programs that require work experience as part of the curriculum.

CPT allows students to gain hands-on experience in their field of study, making them more competitive in the job market. It enables students to apply concepts learned in the classroom in real-world situations, thereby enhancing their academic and career prospects.

What is OPT?

OPT stands for Optional Practical Training. It is a form of temporary employment authorization for F-1 students in the U.S., allowing them to gain practical experience in their field of study. OPT can be used either during a student’s academic program (pre-completion OPT) or after completing their academic program (post-completion OPT). OPT grants F-1 visa graduates up to 12 months of work authorization directly related to their degree. STEM graduates get a much-coveted 24-month extension!

OPT provides an opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience and apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. It can significantly enhance a student’s resume and employability prospects.

The Path to More: OPT is often a stepping stone – impress your employer, and they may be willing to sponsor you for a longer-term work visa like the H-1B.
